Most backyard pruning never needed the big saw
5 things to check before you start the petrol saw
Most backyard pruning never needed the big saw
A full-size petrol chainsaw is the right tool for felling trees and cutting firewood by the trailer load. Most backyard pruning lists look different: shrubs, fruit-tree branches, deadwood, a limb hanging over the fence. Here’s how to size the saw to the job.
1
Measure the branches, not the tree
What decides the saw is how thick the branch is, not how big the tree is. The mini chainsaw cuts branches up to 10 cm thick. A trunk or a big structural limb is a job for a bigger saw or an arborist.
2
The setup can take longer than the cut
A petrol saw means mixing fuel, filling the tank, setting the choke and pulling the cord before anything gets cut. For a short round of pruning, that’s most of the job. The mini chainsaw runs on an 18V rechargeable battery: clip it in and press the button. Like any chainsaw, it still needs a top-up of bar and chain oil.

A 1 kg saw goes where you point it
A big saw is heavy to hold out in front of you, and heavier again above shoulder height. The mini chainsaw weighs 1 kg, less than a bag of sugar, and it’s made for one-handed use.

It only runs when you mean it to
It has a dual-switch safety system. The chain only moves while you press the power button and squeeze the trigger together, so it won’t start by accident. Gloves come in the kit.
5
Everything’s in the box
The kit has the saw, two 18V batteries, a fast charger, a spare chain, a screwdriver, a socket wrench and a pair of gloves. Each battery gives roughly 45 minutes of cutting, so with two you can swap mid-job and keep going.
The fix
Right-sized for the everyday pruning list
- Charge it. Charge the batteries like a phone.
- Oil it. Top up the bar and chain oil.
- Cut. Clip in a battery, press the button and squeeze the trigger.
Honest note: it won’t fell a gum tree or cut through big trunks. For anything thicker than 10 cm, anything near power lines, or any cut you’d have to make from a ladder, use a bigger saw or call an arborist. Wear the gloves and eye protection every time.
