Why your hose keeps kinking
3 reasons hoses kink, and 2 things that help
Why your hose keeps kinking
It’s not the fold that gets you. It’s the walk back across the yard to straighten it, then the second walk when it happens again at the next corner. Here’s what’s going on, and what makes it happen less.
1
A kink starts as a twist
Drag a hose across the yard or coil it by hand and it picks up twist. A twisted hose relieves that twist by rolling into a loop. Then you tug it to reach the next bed, the loop pulls tight, the wall folds flat, and the water stops.
2
Corners, beds and pots give the loop somewhere to catch
A hose rarely runs in a straight line. It bends round the corner of the house, the edge of a bed, a pot or a chair leg. Every tight bend is a spot where a loop can form, and where a tug from the far end pulls it closed.
Choose your length ↓3
Spare hose on the ground means more loops
Every metre you’re not using is still lying on the ground, snaking back and forth. More slack gives loops more chances to cross and pull tight.
4
An expandable hose shrinks back when you’re done
Hand-coiling a regular hose puts a twist in it with every loop, and those twists are waiting for you next time. The Better Gardens Expandable Garden Hose stretches up to 3× with the tap on. Turn the tap off and it shrinks back, so there’s much less hose to wind up and carry.
5
Lay it out, and size it, for the job
Run it in a clear line from the tap, keep it out from under furniture and away from sharp corners, and pick the length that reaches your furthest bed. It comes in 7.5, 15, 22.5 and 30 m. If you water the front and back from one tap, the 30 m is the one most people choose.

Stretches when you need it. Shrinks back when you’re done.
- Connect it. The brass connectors screw onto the tap by hand, and there’s one for 12 mm and one for 19 mm taps.
- Turn the tap on. The hose stretches out as it fills.
- Water. The spray gun has 10 patterns, from a gentle shower to a jet for paths and the car.
- Turn the tap off. It shrinks back, ready for the wall hanger or the storage bag.
Honest note: no hose is kink-proof, this one included. Lay it in a clear line from the tap, disconnect it after use and store it out of direct sun. Leaving any expandable hose under pressure in hot weather can shorten its life.
