I binned 3 hoses in 2 years. Then a neighbour showed me the 2 spots that always fail.
Every summer, the same fight. Drag it out. Untwist the kinks. Find a new split. Bin it by Christmas. If you've ever sworn at a hose and felt like a mug for buying it, read this first.
I'm not an easy sell. After the third hose let me down, I'd decided they were all the same rubbish. Dear ones from the hardware shop, cheap ones online, same result. Kink the second you turn your back. Crack where it screws onto the tap. And so heavy by the end of the yard you feel it in your shoulder the next morning.
So when my neighbour Rob said he'd found "the last hose he'd ever buy," I rolled my eyes. But Rob had been burnt too. That's the only reason I listened.
Every cheap hose dies in the same 2 spots
Here's what Rob showed me. A cheap hose has one thin tube inside. Heat and water pressure split it. And the bit that screws onto the tap is plastic, so it cracks and leaks. The core and the fitting. That's where they all go.
This one is built the other way around. Three layers inside instead of one, so the core can't split. And solid brass at the tap instead of plastic, so it can't crack. They fixed the two spots that fail. So it doesn't.
The bit that won me over
Turn the tap on and it grows to full length. Turn it off and it shrinks back to store. The whole thing lifts in one hand. With my dodgy shoulder, that was the difference between watering the garden and letting it go brown.
My friend with arthritis says the brass fitting clicks on by hand, no tools, no grip. She does her whole garden herself now. At our age, that matters.
Two summers on, I haven't replaced it once
I've watered the veggie patch nearly every day since. Two full summers. No kink. No split. No leak at the tap. For the first time, I'm not eyeing off a new hose at the shops.
And the price stung less than I thought. I'd already spent more than this binning the cheap ones. This one I've bought once. It's Aussie owned, packed in Brisbane, and you get 30 days to send it back if it's not the best hose you've owned. That's the only reason a sceptic like me took the punt.
